Liverpool fans make shock Jurgen Klopp demand after Man City run riot at Anfield

One Liverpool fan called into a national radio station to argue that Jurgen Klopp should be sacked after the weekend's defeat to Manchester City, leaving the Reds' title defence in tatters.

City outplayed Liverpool in the second half, with Jurgen Klopp's side unable to exert any semblance of pressure or control after half-time.

Ilkay Gundogan scored twice, while Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden added one goal apiece to move Pep Guardiola's team 10 points clear of the champions with a game in hand.

After 68 home matches without a loss, it was Liverpool's third home defeat in succession. They have now scored just twice in their last five matches at Anfield and, per Klopp, are focusing on a top-four finish, not hauling in City, during the closing months of the season.

"I am absolutely fed up," one Liverpool fan, Phillip, told BBC Radio 5 Live's 606. "To be honest with you, after watching that game today, we were never in it. Even when [Mohamed] Salah scored the penalty, I thought 'well, we're not going to go anywhere from here'.

"He has had his day. He brought in one of the best years in the club's history. But, I think, in his interview today, he showed no emotion. He was gone. He was done.

"The best option to bring in is [Steven] Gerrard from Rangers. That is controversial but I think it's right."

On the mistakes made in the summer, Phillip added: "I think as well, we missed a huge opportunity in the transfer window.

"We had loads of centre-backs on offer. I think we should have signed Shkodran Mustafi because I think he would have suited our team perfectly.

"Playing the ball out from the back, he's not the best defender, but playing alongside [Joel] Matip, I think he would have been alright."

Not all Liverpool fans have so hastily called for Klopp's departure, however.

Prior to Phillip's call, John said: "I know social media isn't a great barometer of football fans' rationale, but I've seen a few fans call for Klopp's head and I think it's absolutely ridiculous.

"We've played 23 Premier League games this season, our three senior centre-halves have missed 43 of them combined.

"How do our fans expect Trent [Alexander-Arnold] and [Andy] Robertson, who have been a critical part of our success the past two seasons, to go forward with the same attacking threat without the insurance of [Virgil] Van Dijk and [Joe] Gomez behind them?

"They're playing with two midfielders at centre-half. Our fluidity from defence to attack has been completely disrupted. We haven't got the [Jordan] Henderson and Fabinho ball carriers. I just think it's a joke."
