Liverpool fans love what James Milner did during first day of pre-season training

James Milner has firmly become a fans' favourite at Liverpool and he enhanced his reputation during the first day of pre-season training.

Former England star Milner was among among the initial group who arrived at Melwood on Saturday to begin preparations for the new campaign.

He was joined at the club's state-of-the-art training complex by fellow first-team players including Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adam Lallana.

Milner has a reputation for being a battling, hard-working midfielder - and he lived up to that hype on his return to training.

Having won the fitness test last year, the former Manchester City star delivered the goods again by showing he has remained in tip-top condition over the summer.

He found himself up against Joe Gomez, 22, in this year's fitness test and had enough gas in the latter stages to completely blow his team-mate away and win the race.

And Liverpool fans were loving his exploits, with some taking to social media to hail the midfielder as 'a machine'.

Another supporter said Milner 'isn't human' while one wrote: "Rumour has it Milner still hasn't finished running from last year's test."

Klopp will initially work with a reduced number of 16 due to the late returns of players on international duty after last month's Champions League final victory, and those still actively involved.

They include Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita in the Africa Cup of Nations, and Alisson Becker and Roberto Firmino in the Copa America.

Despite the absence of those stars, there were plenty of familiar faces present who were put through their paces by Klopp and his Liverpool staff.

Among the other arrivals were Oxlade-Chamberlain, Rhian Brewster, Gomez and Lallana.
