Liverpool fans left baffled by Martin Tyler's Trent Alexander-Arnold remark

Trent Alexander-Arnold is regarded as one of England’s brightest prospects - but that didn't stop Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler controversially questioning his ability.

The right-back has enjoyed a stunning season after helping Liverpool secure a sixth European crown by beating Tottenham in the Champions League final last month.

And he seemingly enhanced his reputation with an impressive performance for England in their Nations League third-place play-off win over Switzerland on Sunday.

However veteran broadcaster Tyler questioned whether the 20-year-old full-back is good enough defensively to play for England - and Liverpool fans haven’t taken it well.

Football supporters were quick to take to social media to criticise Tyler for his questionable opinion, which he aired during the match.

One wrote: “The pedestal international football continues to be placed upon is bemusing.

“Martin Tyler essentially asking if Trent Alexander-Arnold can make the ‘step up’ to this stage.

“He’s just been an integral part of the side who won the Champions League, a far tougher competition.”

Another said: “It’s Martin Tyler tho. If Trent played for United he’d be saying how easy it’ll be for him.”

Jordan Pickford was England's penalty shoot-out hero once again as Gareth Southgate's men eventually overcame Switzerland to bring an exciting end to a tepid third-place play-off in the Nations League.

Three days on from losing their semi-final to Holland due to two defensive gifts and a narrow offside call, the Three Lions returned to a far quieter Estadio D Afonso Henriques for Sunday's battle for bronze.

Callum Wilson thought he had grabbed a late winner ruled until the video assistant referee intervened in Guimaraes, where England dominated throughout only for the match to end 0-0 after 120 minutes.

The match went to spot-kicks and Pickford again come into his own in the shootout, denying Josip Drmic in sudden death after scoring his own spot-kick as the Three Lions won 6-5 on penalties.

It was a positive note at the end at the end of a forgettable match that at least brings the team bronze medals and penalty confidence ahead of Euro 2020.
