Liverpool fans leave message on Anfield gates for John W Henry following owner's apology

Liverpool fans have responded to John W. Henry’s apology, claiming they “will never forget” his role in the Super League fiasco.

The Reds’ principal owner was forced into an embarrasing U-turn, after initally agreeing to be one of 12 founding members in the proposed new tournament.

However, shortly after the announcement, Liverpool – along with five of their Premier League rivals – received a furious backlash about the uncompetitive nature of the proposals.

Along with fan protests, a number of players voiced their concern, with club captain Jordan Henderson leading the charge for the champions.

By Tuesday night, Liverpool’s owners had conceded defeat and announced they would no longer be a part of plans that promised to shake-up European football.

Henry then broke his silence shortly after, apologising to supporters, players and manager Jurgen Klopp.

“I want to apologise to all the fans and supporters of Liverpool Football Club for the disruption I caused over the past 48 hours,” the statement began.

“It goes without saying but should be said that the project put forward was never going to stand without the support of the fans.

John Henry issued a length apology to supporters after the decision to leave the ESL (@LFC)

"No-one ever thought differently in England. Over these 48 hours you were very clear that it would not stand. We heard you. I heard you.

“And I want to apologise to Jürgen, to Billy, to the players and to everyone who works so hard at LFC to make our fans proud. They have absolutely no responsibility for this disruption.

"They were the most disrupted and unfairly so. This is what hurts most. They love your club and work to make you proud every single day.”

He continued: “Again, I’m sorry, and I alone am responsible for the unnecessary negativity brought forward over the past couple of days. It’s something I won’t forget. And shows the power the fans have today and will rightly continue to have.”

Despite his lengthy statement, certain sections of the fanbase are unwilling to forget the perceived betrayal from Fenway Sports Group, with Jamie Carragher suggesting they have no future at the club.

On Friday, a banner was put up on the gates commemorating Bob Paisley, reading: “Nice one for the apology John. But we will never forget.”
