Liverpool fans have 'mixed feelings' over Steven Gerrard to Aston Villa development

Liverpool supporters have 'mixed feelings' on Steven Gerrard potentially becoming the next Aston Villa manager following recent developments.

Initial reports on Monday claim the former Liverpool captain is on Villa's 'shortlist' to replace Dean Smith, but rumours on Tuesday suggest the Midlands club are set to make a 'formal approach'.

Gerrard became Rangers manager in 2018 and has had a successful start to life in the dugout as he ended Celtic's nine-year dominance in the Scottish Premiership last season.

Now, he's being linked with a second Premier League job in the last month after he was rumoured to be a target for the Newcastle United after they sacked Steve Bruce.

Supporters have 'mixed feelings' over Gerrard potentially making the step up to the English top flight, with one eye on the possibility of succeeding Jurgen Klopp in a few years time.

"I'm surprised regards Steven Gerrard to Aston Villa," one supporter tweeted.

"But, I suppose Birmingham is closer to home for him than Newcastle and it would be a chance for him to cut his teeth in the Premier League at a fairly big club. Interesting."

Gerrard is settled in Scotland and responded to rumours linking him to the Newcastle job last month.

“Do I look happy? Do I look settled? Don’t ask me silly questions then," Gerrard said.

However, The Telegraph claim Villa have performed 'background checks' on Gerrard and his potential staff and that the former Liverpool star is in fact 'ready' to speak to them should Rangers grant permission.

And he is now odds-on with bookies to be the next man in the Villa Park dugout.

Gerrard's current deal at Ibrox runs until 2024 and it reportedly includes a release clause of more than £2million.

With Villa said to want a 'big name' and a 'strong character' to replace Dean Smith, it seems the 41-year-old could be the ideal target.
