Liverpool fans give verdict on Joel Matip future after Ibrahima Konate transfer

Liverpool fans believe the club should retain the services of Joel Matip next season despite his injury troubles and the signing of Ibrahima Konate.

Matip has proven to be an excellent signing for the club after arriving on a free from Schalke in 2016, helping the Reds win both the Champions League and Premier League.

Long-term injuries to both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez last season presented Matip with an opportunity to become Liverpool's temporary first-choice centre-back but the 29-year-old also succumbed to injury for the majority of the campaign.

The Cameroonian defender's injury problems continue to be a cause for concern and Liverpool strengthened their ranks with the £35m capture of Konate from RB Leipzig.

Konate will join Gomez, Matip and Van Dijk along with Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams in the centre-back department and many supporters expect those numbers to be trimmed in the summer.

Despite Matip's fitness issues, Liverpool fans believe he should not be sold.

The ECHO asked fans on Twitter: "After the signing of Ibrahima Konate and Nat Phillips' resurgence, what should Liverpool do with Joel Matip this summer?"

59 per cent of the 3,071 respondents believe the defender's services should be retained.

41 per cent of the respondents believe Liverpool would be better served in allowing Matip to leave in the summer.

Matip was stepping up his return from injury in April but was unable to play any part in any remaining games as Liverpool ended the season in third.

The defender has been assigned a specialist rehabilitation programme aimed to help prevent the niggling injuries that have plagued his Anfield career.

Jurgen Klopp confirmed Matip will be ready for a full pre-season alongside Gomez and Van Dijk.
