Liverpool fans furious with Sadio Mane for not appealing for penalty vs Barcelona

Liverpool fans are angry with Sadio Mane for apparently being a bit too honest in their Champions League semi-final clash with Barcelona.

The Reds forward was through on goal early on in the first leg at the Nou Camp and about to pull the trigger to test Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

But Mane was bundled to the ground by Gerard Pique in the penalty area, resulting in every eye in the stadium looking in the direction of referee Bjorn Kuipers.

It looked as if Kuipers was preparing to make a gesture with his hands, either pointing to the penalty spot or waving the game on.

The BT Sport commentators even suggested the referee had a big decision to make, as it looked as if Mane was indeed fouled.

But before the match official had a chance to react, Mane jumped back to his feet and attempted to continue playing.

The opportunity came to nothing though as Pique managed to get himself goal-side of Mane and make a challenge.

Liverpool fans reacted to the incident on social media, and many Twitter users hit out at Mane for being too honest.

"Mane should have stayed down," tweeted one fan, while another added: "That's what you get for being too honest Mane should of milked it."

A third said: "That was a penalty and Mane just f***** up by being an honest guy."

And a fourth concluded: "That Mane penalty incident is a great example of precisely why Salah - and most forwards - will emphasise contact.

"Referees will take any opportunity to avoid making a penalty decision. Ridiculous that he's put the whistle to his mouth and then not even so much as looked at it."
