Liverpool fans furious with referee's Sadio Mane decision against Manchester United

Liverpool supporters were left furious and frustrated as the half-time whistle blew during their crunch clash with Manchester United.

With the game goalless after 45 minutes, a minimum of one minute added time was displayed on the fourth official board.

With around 55 seconds of that played, referee Paul Tierney blew his whistle to end the opening period of Sunday's top-of-the-table showdown at Anfield.

But he did so just as Liverpool midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri had played a pass over the top towards team-mate Sadio Mane who was bursting forward dangerously.

The early whistle left Thiago with his head in his hands, while Trent Alexander-Arnold had a word with Tierney as the two teams left the field.

Liverpool fans were not happy and made their feelings know on social media, suggesting that Mane may have been through on goal if the move had been allowed to develop.

The incident was discussed at the interval on Sky Sports, with Reds legend Graeme Souness saying: "He (Tierney) has gone early. It's slightly frustrating for Liverpool."

But fellow pundit Micah Richards did not agree, adding: "I think (Victor) Lindelof knocks it back to the keeper.

"I think we're clutching (at straws) there!"
