Liverpool fans furious as Premier League make referee decision for Chelsea showdown

Liverpool fans are not happy with the Premier League's decision to appoint Paul Tierney as the VAR official for their trip to face Chelsea in the new year.

Tierney took charge of the 2-2 draw against Tottenham on Sunday with Chris Kavanagh at Stockley Park.

Two big decisions went against Jurgen Klopp's side as Harry Kane was only shown a yellow card for a dangerous challenge on Andy Robertson and Diogo Jota was denied a penalty after he was shoved by Spurs full-back Emerson Royal, who made no attempt to play the ball.

Robertson was later shown a straight red in the second-half for a rash swipe at Emerson Royal, Tierney initially showed a yellow card but upgraded the decision after VAR stepped in.

Liverpool supporters, as well as Jurgen Klopp, were left aggrieved with the decisions and the Reds boss criticised the officiating in his post-match press conference.

“You can give Robbo a red card. It is not the smartest challenge but that [Kane challenge] is definitely a red card. No doubt about it. His [Robertson] leg was in the air, it was pure coincidence," he said.

"We have a VAR sitting there and he thinks have a look at Robertson again. Fine that’s what he is there for. But what did he do in that situation? And then there is the penalty situation with Diogo Jota.

“Mr Tierney told me Diogo stops on purpose because he wants the foul. First and foremost if you want to shoot you have to stop because you cannot do both.

“He told me he thinks he stops on purpose. It is incredible. He had the best spot on the pitch and doesn’t give it. You will have to ask him what his problem is with me."

After a review of Klopp's comments, the FA have decided they will not be taking any further action against the Liverpool boss.

The match officials for the upcoming league matches have been confirmed by the governing body and Anthony Taylor is set to take charge of the match at Stamford Bridge, with Tierney on VAR.

Supporters are not happy with the decision, as one said on social media: "No way, Paul Tierney is VAR referee in our upcoming match vs Chelsea. I can't believe this."

Another said: "Paul Tierney on VAR for the Chelsea game? Here we go again,"
