Liverpool fans discuss Ibrahima Konate concerns - but club chiefs disagree

The majority of Liverpool fans are over the moon with the news they have finalised a deal for Ibrahima Konate.

The Anfield club have triggered the RB Leipzig defender's £35million release clause with the centre-back penning a long term deal, becoming Jurgen Klopp's first signing of the summer.

It's a welcome boost for the Reds after they pinpointed Konate as their main priority for the upcoming window.

Liverpool's issues at centre-half have been well documented this season after Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip suffered long-term injuries during the campaign.

Klopp had a chance to make their loan move for Ozan Kabak permanent but have opted not to exercise their £18m option to buy with Konate's arrival.

Should Liverpool be concerned about Ibrahima Konate's injury record? Comment below .

Van Dijk, Gomez and Matip are all expected to return at different stages in pre-season, but their timetable is unclear. That means the signing of Konate is critical and it's a huge bonus to get him onboard early doors to get him up to speed as quickly as possible.

Liverpool are confident they are investing in a quality defender with an impressive physical skillset who should adapt to the Premier League with ease.

He has been an integral part of Leipzig's rise under Julian Nagelsmann, who finished runners-up in the Bundesliga this season, playing alongside Dayot Upamecano in the heart of the defence. Their successful pairing attracted a lot of attention from clubs with Bayern Munich snapping up Konate's partner in crime this summer.

At the age of 22, the Reds feel they have a player who can keep getting better who has a very high ceiling in terms of the level he can eventually reach in his career.

The only downside, if there is one, is that Konate has missed a serious amount of game time due to a long-term injury that sidelined him for a full calendar year from October 2019, carrying over into the start of the Bundesliga campaign.

He then missed seven games due to an ankle problem at the turn of the year but returned to full fitness to see out the remainder of the term.

With Liverpool's recent bad luck with injuries at the centre-back position, some Liverpool fans are worried he could be injury-prone.

@ AnythingLFC_ said: "Ibrahima Konate played only 13 league games last season while he only played 8 the season before. Is this a worry for a position we currently have a big injury problem in?"

@ Buezenwa added: "I wonder why they will spend that much on another injury-prone player, we already have enough of them. Gome, Chamberlain and Keita."

@ Gareth230591 tweeted: "100 per cent (worried) and especially with the record we have with injuries over last few seasons."

@ JAndresDJ97 said: "Very worrying, we need to stop signing injury-prone players ."

But club chiefs are not concerned about his injury record as extensive medical tests didn't bring up any red flags, according to The Athletic.

Konate is fully fit and preparing to face the Netherlands in the UEFA U21 European Championships on Monday and will be ready for the start of Liverpool's pre-season camp.
