Liverpool fans convinced Sadio Mane got Jordan Pickford payback for Virgil van Dijk foul

Liverpool fans are convinced Sadio Mane got one over Jordan Pickford and tried to get back at the Everton keeper for his foul on Virgil van Dijk last season.

The Reds defender was ruled out a lengthy period of time after Pickford's clumsy challenge during the Merseyside derby in October 2020.

Van Dijk suffered an ALC injury in his right knee and had season-ending surgery, as a result.

The Dutchman returned to Goodison for the first time since the incident on Wednesday night as Jurgen Klopp's men ran out 4-1 winners.

And Liverpool fans reckon Mane got a little payback for Van Dijk as the winger fouled the Everton goalie.

Mane thought he was through on goal in the second half, but Pickford came rushing out of his goal to clear the danger.

But the forward left one on the Englishman as the Toffees were awarded a free-kick.

Liverpool supporters spotted the incident and were lapping it up on social media.

One fan said: "Mane trying to do a Pickford on Pickford for VVD."

Another added: "Mane didn't forget what Pickford did, he wanted a piece for big Virg."

One tweeted: "Loving Mane giving Pickford a little Van Dijk payback"

Klopp admitted prior to the match that Van Dijk was still not over the incident with Pickford last season.

"We are human and it's difficult to forget something like that," he said.

"That situation should not happen in football and it does not happen very often. Virgil's very experienced and he has dealt with this situation.

"It might be more difficult because it's in the same place, but apart from that it's just a football game.

"Of course, it is a derby and we understand the supporters' souls but we must try to treat it as just another game.

"It was a long time ago now and we just want to play football.

"You must have cool heads in a derby game. We are an emotional team but we use our emotion the right way."
