Liverpool fans can watch likely FIFA Club World Cup final opponents in action this weekend

Liverpool fans will be able to watch their likely opponents in next month's FIFA Club World Cup final when the Copa Libertadores final takes place this weekend.

Brazilian champions Flamengo take on Argentinian counterparts River Plate in the 60th Copa Libertadores final in Lima, Peru this Saturday evening (23rd November).

The winners will take their place in Qatar next month and, like Liverpool, will be go straight into the semi-finals where they will face the winner of one of the quarter-finals.

River Plate are the current Libertadores champions having been beaten Boca Juniors in the semi-finals, the same opponents they eventually defeated in last year's final in a two-legged tie marred by the Boca team coach being attacked when arriving at River for the second leg, which led to the match being moved to Madrid's Bernabeu stadium.

Having earned the right to travel to Abu Dhabi for last year's Club World Cup with their fourth Libertadores triumph, River then surprisingly lost to Abu Dhabi side Al-Ain on penalties in the semi-final before beating Japan's Kashima Antlers in the 3rd/4th place play-off. Real Madrid beat Al-Ain 4-1 in the final.

Flamengo meanwhile beat Lucas Leiva's former side Gremio 6-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals and were Liverpool's opponents the first time the Reds attempted to become world champions.

In December 1981, Bob Paisley's men were beaten 3-0 in a one-off tie for the-then 'Intercontinental Cup' in Japan by a Zico-inspired Flamengo, who despite being regarded as on Brazil's biggest clubs have not made it to the Copa Libertadores final since.

This year's Libertadores final in Peru is the first to be played over just one leg and will be televised in Britain on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer on Saturday from 7.45pm GMT.
