Liverpool fans can't believe what England fans did when Joe Gomez replaced Mason Mount

Liverpool fans have reacted with disbelief after Joe Gomez has met with boos by England fans as he was subbed on to replace Chelsea's Mason Mount in a 7-0 win over Montenegro.

The former Charlton Athletic youngster was sent on in the 70th minute at Wembley Stadium only to receive a less than warm welcome by his own team's supporters.

It was a reaction that followed the decision to send Raheem Sterling home from the England camp by manager Gareth Southgate.

A former Liverpool player himself, he reacted after the Reds beat his own club Manchester City in a potential title decider in the Premier League prior to the November international break.

The attacker reportedly scratched Gomez under his right eye and the mark was clearly visible as the defender prepared to come on against Montenegro.

Speaking after the match at Wembley, England manager Southgate said: "I am hugely disappointed for Joe. Joe had done nothing wrong.

"No England player should ever be booed when they are wearing the shirt. All the players are particularly disappointed with that."

Liverpool could not believe what they were hearing watching the match from home and reacted to the boos on Twitter.

Catford-born Joe Gomez played 24 games for Charlton before Liverpool signed him from the Addicks after only a single season of senior football in 2015.
