Liverpool fans bringing 'negative focus' on team with victory celebrations, says Mayor

Mayor Joe Anderson has accused some Liverpool fans of “bringing negative focus” on the club through their title-winning celebrations.

Thousands of Reds fans gathered in the city centre on Friday to celebrate the team’s title win despite police and politicians warning there is still a “major risk” of coronavirus.

While fans gathered around Anfield after Chelsea defeated Manchester City on Thursday to confirm Jurgen Klopp’s side as champions.

Police have now been granted more power to disperse crowds in the city after part of the Liver Building caught on fire Friday night.

And a police spokesman described the scenes as a ”significant disorder”, with videos appearing to show fireworks being aimed at the Liver Building.

And now Anderson has taken to social media to condemn those overshadowing the Reds’ success on the pitch.

He wrote: “More in sorrow than anger, like most Liverpool fans and residents I condemn those that brought a negative focus on Liverpool FC and our City.

“The pictures, videos showing people’s behaviour is being talked about instead of the fantastic achievement of Liverpool FC. Thank you to those fans who have listened.”

While Anderson also emphasised the source of his concerns stem from the ongoing risk of coronavirus.

“I am really concerned about scenes at Pier Head tonight,” he added.

“I appreciate Liverpool fans want to celebrate but please, for your own safety, and that of others, go home and celebrate at home.

“Covid-19 is still a major risk and our city has already lost far too many people to the illness.”
