Liverpool fans brand Luis Suarez a 'cheat' after Barcelona star's Champions League antics at Anfield

They used to be a match made in heaven after his goalscoring heroics came so close to leading them to the Premier League title. Five years later, there's no love lost between Luis Suarez and the Liverpool fans.

The Uruguayan left Anfield for Barcelona for £75million in 2014 and despite the acrimonious nature of his exit, some fans reserved appreciation for his impact.

In his three-and-a-half years at the club, Suarez earned cult status on Merseyside after scoring 82 goals in 133 games for the club.

But after stating he wouldn't celebrate against his former club if he scored at Anfield, Suarez found himself on the end of more than a few robust challenges from the likes of James Milner and Fabinho.

The Barcelona striker appeared to throw himself to the ground under pressure from Virgil van Dijk, and the Anfield crowd responded by shouting “cheat, cheat, cheat, cheat” at their former hero.

After that episode, he was greeted with a chorus of boos from the Liverpool fans every time he touched the ball, along with a string of expletives from the home support.

It marked a huge shift from the days when Liverpool fans defended their striker at every turn, even during his most controversial moments.

But after receiving such a hostile reception at the ground where he used to be worshipped, the 32-year-old soon found himself to be the villain.
