Liverpool fans avoid Anfield as empty streets surround first home match in 109 days

The streets around Anfield and the city centre were left deserted before the Reds first home match in 109 days.

A small group of fans lined up outside the stadium to welcome the team back after a long three month break due to the coronavirus pandemic but quickly dispersed before kick off.

The Premier League was halted in early March, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, and Liverpool only returned to play on Sunday when they faced off against Everton at Goodison.

With the league in grasping distance, Liverpool fans will be finding their own ways to watch the match against Crystal Palace.

Roads surrounding the famous stadium were eerily quiet in the minutes before kick-off, when supporters would normally be crammed in together before heading inside.

Anfield Road and Walton Breck Road would normally see crowds of fans walking towards the grounds.

The nearby pubs would also regularly be filled to the brim with those finding a seat to watch the game, or even those enjoying a match day pint before heading up the street.

But tonight saw some very different scenes around the stadium.

Instead of the thousands who normally greet the players when they arrive on the team bus, Jurgen Klopp's men were waved and clapped into the tunnel by a small group of fans who were flanked by police.

Officers were tasked with making sure that large crowds didn't show up at the stadium an the surrounding areas to keep in line with the ongoing government regulations over social distancing.

Metal fencing was also erected around the entrances to the grounds at Stanley Park and Anfield Road.

Earlier on Wednesday, Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram asked people to refrain from turning up at the stadium and said that if Liverpool win the league, they will be given the "celebration they deserve" when it is safe to do so.

He tweeted: "I know how hard it is to stay away from Anfield when @LFC are playing but for now, please keep supporting them at home.

"When it's safe to, we'll be able to come together and give this amazing season the celebration it deserves. #LFCAtHome."

Matches are expected to be played behind closed doors for the rest of the season as the UK continues to battle coronavirus.

The government is using a 5-stage framework for the phased return of elite sport.

The remaining matches in the 2019/20 season will be played under Stage 3.

This allows for domestic matches to be played, providing access is restricted to ‘individuals with essential functional roles.

Supporters are not permitted and will not return until medical advice and government legislation allows them to do so.

Liverpool could lift the Premier League title for the first time ever as early as Thursday night, if Chelsea defeat last year's winners Manchester City.
