Liverpool fans attending UEFA Champions League match against Atletico Madrid will be searched after leaving the stadium toilets

Liverpool fans will be searched after leaving the toilets at the Champions League match in Madrid.

Thousands of fans are expected to travel to the Spanish capital ahead of the club's clash against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

Those who regularly attend away matches are aware of the stringent searches both home and away fans go through before entering a European stadium but now police have stated that searches are being stepped up for the first leg against the Spanish side.

On Twitter, Merseyside Police informed supporters of the arrangements that would be in place at the turnstiles on Tuesday evening.

Fans will be searched stringently as Liverpool supporters return to the Wanda Metropolitano (PA)

In a statement they said: "AthMad v @LFC Updates from the UEFA meeting.

"There will be several body searches and ticket checks before the actual turnstiles.

"A bag deposit will be near to gate 24. Anticipate a hold back of at least 20 mins."

In a second tweet, they also informed fans that searches would also be carried out as fans from both sides exited the toilets inside the stadium.

Supporters were also reminded although they are returning to the same venue their side lifted a sixth European title, they will not be seated in the same area they were last June.

They said: "AthMad v @LFC cont. All persons will be searched after exiting the toilets inside the stadium.

"Use the green line metro to the stadium. In the CL final LFC were the home team. You are on the opposite side."

A number of fans have questioned the reason behind the searches outside the toilets but police had explained why they are taking place.

In response to a Twitter follower, officers said the reason for the bathroom searches were to make sure no items had been "secreted" into the stadium.

In particular officers and security are tying to make sure that no pyrotechnics are being brought into the match.
