Liverpool fans are up in arms over Neil Warnock's joke threat about Manchester City match

Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock has got Liverpool fans hot under the collar over tongue-in-cheek remarks he might play a "reserve team" in their Premier League trip to Manchester City on Wednesday night.

Jurgen Klopp's side are slugging it out with the blue half of Manchester for the title, and went back to the top of the Premier League table on Sunday evening with a last-gasp 2-1 victory over Spurs at Anfield.

Pep Guardiola's men could re-take the lead with a win over the Bluebirds.

Warnock jokingly claimed: "I think we can keep the score down at Man City, I think we can keep it to single figures.

"But I might play the reserves down there, it’ll be interesting to see what the journalists think of that."

Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan issues statement following Chelsea controversy

And after the Bluebirds' controversial 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon that plunged Cardiff closer to the relegation trap-door, Warnock revisited the trip to the Etihad.

"We keep getting knock-backs, I will probably play the U23s on Wednesday against Manchester City and try to keep it down to 10 or 11," he added.

"It doesn't matter who you play at the minute, it is who has a flag in his hand and who has a whistle," said Warnock, referring to the controversy of an offside Chelsea equaliser, that was allowed to stand.

Superb Cardiff City must channel injustice at Man City, Chelsea exposed for what they are and duo continue revival

But Liverpool's fans have taken Warnock at his word and piled into the Cardiff boss on social media.

It was Liverpool, who Warnock took a blast at 12 years ago for fielding a weakened side at Fulham, that helped contribute to getting his Sheffield United side relegated.

And claims he could follow Rafa Benitez's lead when Cardiff visit the Etihad have not gone down well in the red half of Merseyside, even though it's highly unlikely to happen.

Here's what the Liverpool fans are saying:

ScarletHaze: This actually goes back to the 2003 League Cup semi final when we squeezed past the Blades after extra time and this joker was left on the touchline flapping his arms, frothing at the mouth and covering his shell suit with saliva about some refereeing decision.

He just suffers from terminal bitterness. Fortunately we won't have to see his ugly mug next season.

Rocco: How would we know if he played a weakened team? Horrible man, hope they go down!

Maddog: City need to drop points but I am sure nobody is holding their breath that it will happen against Cardiff. Doesn't matter who he decides to play.

It probably wont happen because of the goal difference as it stands but it would be hilarious if his u23's get thumped and he ends up being relegated because of goal difference.

Istanbul250505: I think his comments have a hint of sarcasm in them... plus playing the reserves might not be such a bad idea, can’t be much worse then the first team.

Ohnonotagain: Doesn't matter who you will play you will still get relegated, it's always someone else's fault. Moan, moan, moan.

David31058: He's only thrown his toys out of the pram. I don't think he's actually being serious.

Dannioo72000uk: Sour grapes Warnock! Can't blame our players for not wanting to go and play for him. He's got an axe to grind against Liverpool. I do agree Cardiff had some bad decisions and the ref was very poor.

Briank8: Warnock is never gonna let it go, never! About playing the U23’s he can’t afford to do it as it’ll be as huge case of disrespecting the Cardiff fans as you’ve ever seen. City will more than likely give them a beating but I can understand his other comments and agree with him.

Voste: Does it matter though? City is still going to give his 1st or 3rd team a hiding!
