Liverpool fan who battled to stay alive for Champions League final is 'buzzing'

A Liverpool fan who battled to stay alive long enough to watch the Champions League final is 'buzzing'.

Dave Evans, who has terminal cancer, survived to see his team win the league for the sixth time on Saturday.

The football fanatic also received messages of support from Liverpool legends ahead of the big game.

The ECHO reports that he had saved up £10,000 to go to Madrid from New Zealand, where he recently emigrated.

However after receiving a devastating cancer diagnosis, he instead had to face the difficult truth he might not even get to watch the Champions League final.

Dave even thought that he would have to spend his savings on his own funeral.

His story moved ECHO readers, with many getting in touch to offer their support, and others spreading the word among the Liverpool FC community.

As a result, Dave might not have been able to attend the match, but instead some of Liverpool's biggest names came to his hospice room, in the form of video messages from heroes including Steven Gerrard, Jurgen Klopp, Jamie Carragher and James Milner.

After the Reds' victory on Saturday, Dave's wife Liz told the ECHO:  "We are buzzing - I'm going to have to scrape Dave off the ceiling later."

As for their favourite moment she said: "Seeing Dave's face when we got the second goal was the moment that sealed it for us both."

In the video Liz took Dave sits quietly in the hospice watching the match - but even the strains of his cancer can't stop him cheering when Liverpool scores.

In Steven Gerrard's message to Dave, the former Liverpool captain said: "Hello Dave. It's Steven Gerrard here, unfortunately I'm alone so I can't get one of me children to do the video for me, so you've got to bear with me. Listen I just wanted to drop you a short video message.

"Just to say that from the bottom of my heart I'm really thinking about you right now, I know you've got a real tough fight on. Keep being strong and brave and keep fighting all the way.

"You know I apologise you can't make it out to Madrid to watch the team but I'm sure they are all thinking about you and I'm sure they'll give all the fight and effort possible to get us that number six trophy.

"So yeah, I see all the guys have been dropping you videos and messages of support, so I know you've been behind me and the team for many, many years and shown the team unbelievable support so the least I can do is drop you a short video to show my appreciation and just to say, I'm really thinking about you. You take care of yourself, all the very best Dave, take care."
