Liverpool fan who battled cancer to watch Champions League victory dies

A Liverpool fan who battled against terminal cancer to watch his beloved team win the Champions League has died.

Dave Evans' dreams of going to the European cup final in Madrid were shattered when he was diagnosed with cancer - just weeks after he emigrated to New Zealand with his wife Liz.

With doctors giving him just two weeks to live, the £10,000 they had saved to head to the match was instead saved to pay for Dave's funeral costs.

The former Coventry resident battled on, aided by the warm wishes of past and present Liverpool legends including Jurgen Klopp, Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson, Coventry Live reports.

By the time the club took on Tottenham in the final on June 1 Dave had already outlived the time doctors had given him - the resilient fan able to watch his team lift the cup from the other side of the world.

He died peacefully at the hospice he was staying at in New Zealand on the morning of July 8.

Liz said: "I want him to have a legacy and for other people to have positivity when they are going through a tough time.

"We are planning to set up a charity which would raise money to give people who are terminally ill the chance to tick a sporting event off their bucket list.

"We are in the early stages but I want Dave to have a legacy."

Dave's story shot to national attention when Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp sent him a video message an hour before he left for Madrid.

"I've heard about your story, I've heard you are an unbelievable fighter, and the only thing I can tell you is we think of you, you are really with us," the German said in a heartfelt message.

Midfield James Milner also sent his regards.

"I hear you're not going to make it to Madrid unfortunately and know you'll be supporting us from home and we'll do everything we can to do our job and finish the job and hopefully win a trophy and just wanted to send my best wishes to you and the family," he said.

When the tumour was found, the cancer was in its final stages, and only chemotherapy would prolong Dave's life.

Within eight weeks of the diagnosis, the tumour had grown three times its original size.

Liz now plans to set up a charity to help terminally ill people live out their dreams.

To kick things off Dave's friends will cycle from Coventry to the New Zealand embassy in London.
