Liverpool fan Sean McGurk celebrates goal against Manchester United with 'six times' gesture

Liverpool fan Sean McGurk caused a stir at Old Trafford when he celebrated his goal for Wigan Athletic against Manchester United in the FA Youth Cup on Friday with a “six times” gesture.

The attacking midfielder, who turns 17 on March 15, went wild with delight when he netted for the Latics in front of the Stretford End, traditionally the home of the Red Devils most vociferous supporters.

Although McGurk had drawn Wigan level with his excellently-taken 34th minute strike, they would ultimately lose their quarter-final tie 2-1 with Shola Shoretire and Deji Sotona on target for the hosts who now face Chelsea.

McGurk told Wigan Athletic's website : “I think we played well, as a team, we have come a long way in the competition and we knew this was going to be tough.

“We should have got more from the game.

“It was unbelievable [to score at the Stretford End] but I am gutted for the team that we didn’t go through to the next round.

“We will concentrate on the league now; we are top of the league and after losing at the weekend we need to get our heads back on the league and see how far we can go.

“It was unbelievable to see so many Wigan fans come over to the game (around 1,800 made the short journey) and I would like to thank them for that support.”

Wigan's team on the evening also included defender James Carragher, 17, who is the son of Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher .

Last October when Liverpool drew 1-1 with Manchester United at Old Trafford, the only Premier League game that Jurgen Klopp's side have failed to win so far this season, many travelling Reds fans taunted their hosts with number 6 references, to mark their Champions League success against Tottenham Hotspur in June which ensured they have now won twice as many European Cups as their bitter rivals.
