Liverpool fan Sean Cox to leave hospital to attend charity match in his honour

Liverpool fan Sean Cox will reportedly leave hospital for the first time to attend a charity match in his honour.

Almost one year on since he was brutally attacked outside Anfield , the dad-of-three will travel to Dublin to watch LFC Legends take on the Republic of Ireland team.

The match was organised to help raise funds for Sean's rehabilitation after he suffered life-changing injuries before the club's semi final against AS Roma in April 2017.

Sean spent five weeks being treated at Walton Neurological Centre before being transported home to Co Meath in Ireland.

Speaking to Irish radio Station Newstalk , Sean's friend Stephen Felle revealed that Sean would be attending the match.

He said: "We’re delighted to say that Sean is going to be there in person.

“It’s going to be Sean Cox’s first move outside a medical environment in almost 12 months, so it’s very special for the family, and it’s very emotional for [his wife] Martina.

“She said he does [know he’s going]... she said he does, and he’s excited… he keeps smiling, and he can’t wait."

Stephen added: “It has taken a lot of planning. He is obviously medically dependent, and in terms of the logistics of getting him to there and making sure he’s properly cared for when in the stadium have taken some work.

“The caveat is if Sean got an infection or a cold or something happens between now and Friday, we might have to change the plan. But as we sit here now… that’s the plan.”

Clubbers remember the legendary Liverpool bouncer who 'made them feel safe'

The match will take place on April 12 in aid of the Sean Cox Rehabilitation Trust and a number of LFC greats have been confirmed to play.

Sander Westerveld, Jerzy Dudek, Patrik Berger, Vladimir Smicer, Salif Diao, Robbie Fowler, Rush and Djibril Cisse are all confirmed to play for the Reds.

Glen Johnson also joins the LFC Legends team, as well as Robbie Keane, who, along with McAteer, John Aldridge and Phil Babb, will play for both Liverpool and their opponents.

Kenny Dalglish will manage the Liverpool side, while Mick McCarthy will take charge of the Irish team.

Over €1 million has been raised so far for Sean and the match is expected to substantially add to that.

Tickets for the game are still available and can be purchased from Ticketmaster or you can donate via GoFundMe .

Simone Mastrelli was jailed for three and a half years in February for the attack on Sean Cox.
