Liverpool fan Sean Cox speaks out for first time since serious injury with emotional message

The Liverpool fan left with serious injuries after being assaulted ahead of a Champions League tie has spoken out for the first time since the attack.

Sean Cox was assaulted by a Roma supporter outside Anfield in April 2018 and suffered major head trauma.

The 54-year-old has now offered a message to well-wishers as he continues his road to recovery.

In a video posted by Off The Ball , Cox simply raises his thumb and says: "Thank you."

The Irishman is set to be accompanied by family as he attends a charity match in his honour, held at Dublin's Aviva Stadium.

The game will pit a Liverpool Legends side, managed by Kenny Dalglish , against a Republic of Ireland Legends side, led by current international boss Mick McCarthy.

The Irish side will be captained by former Liverpool and Celtic star Robbie Keane.

Mr Cox's wife Martina has revealed the match will be the first time he has gone out in public since the attack.

She said: "He's going to be there which is great, I didn't think it would happen a couple of months ago.

"It will be quite overwhelming for Sean. He's been home but literally only in our house, and he's been with family.

"At the beginning (after the attack) we didn't know how things were going to pan out, so to have him at the match is really significant."
