Liverpool fan died in Benidorm balcony fall hours after celebrating Champions League win

A Liverpool FC fan died in a Benidorm balcony horror fall just hours after celebrating his team's historic Champions League win on holiday.

Colin McGarry, 48, was holidaying in the Spanish resort town when he fell from the balcony of a hotel in the Calle Gerona area.

The Reds fan is understood to have plunged to his death at 1.45am on Sunday, June 2 - just hours after watching his team lifting the European Cup.

Colin, who lived in the Skegoneill area of Belfast and worked as a scaffolder, had texted his long-term partner Gail McMillan in celebration shortly before his death, the Belfast Telegraph reports.

Gail was informed of Colin's death on Sunday morning, sharing her devastation and heartbreak in an interview with local press.

Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph , Gail said: "Myself and the whole McGarry family are completely devastated by this news.

"Colin was our heart and soul. For something so tragic to happen to him is utterly shocking. The whole community has come out to show their support to us and it is overwhelming. He was the best fiancé, brother and son we could ask for.

"He was our rock and we are left with a space that will never be filled."

She told the Irish News Colin was "the most generous person" she knew.

Gail said: "Everybody who knew him, loved him. He was family-orientated. He took care of everybody. He was such a hard worker."

Colin is understood to have been on holiday with friends in Benidorm, and news of his death prompted an outpouring of grief from loved ones on social media.

Sharing a photo of herself and Colin on Facebook , Gail said: "My love, my life, I can't believe this. You were taken from me before your time. I love you I always have and I always will. Till you hold me in your arms again sleep tight my angel."

One friend commented: "I'm sorry to hear this. In fact I'm shocked to the core, Colin was one of life's good guys. My deepest condolences to you Gail and the whole of the McGarry family."

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said they have offered assistance to the family and were in contact with the local authorities.

It is understood the family are being assisted by the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust , which helps families from Ireland who have lost loved ones abroad, Belfast Live reports.

Gail said: "They have been an absolute godsend to us at this horrendous time."
