Liverpool will be allowed up to 10,000 fans back inside Anfield for the final game of the season at home to Crystal Palace after the council gave the green light to government plans for restricted attendances.
Liverpool City Council’s Ground Safety Group announced they had approved the decision on Monday ahead of the Reds last 2020/21 Premier League fixture which takes place at 4pm on Sunday May 23.
The national government declared last month that from May 17, outdoor sports venues are due to be allowed up to 10,000 fans or 25% capacity, whichever number is lower.
This will enable Anfield, which holds 53,394, to enjoy its first five-figure attendance since a capacity crowd saw Liverpool’s Champions League exit to Atletico Madrid on March 11, 2020.

The Premier League has also moved their penultimate round 37 fixtures back to midweek, to May 18-19, so each club has one home game with fans before the end of the season.
Back in December, Liverpool’s ‘Tier 2’ status as a city enabled Jurgen Klopp’s men to play three Premier League home fixtures in front of restricted crowds of 2,000 (4-0 v Wolverhampton Wanderers; 2-1 v Tottenham Hotspur and 1-1 v West Bromwich Albion) before a third national lockdown was enforced but otherwise their games have been played behind closed doors since the global coronavirus pandemic began.
Liverpool already had a ballot open for fans to express their interest in attending the game at Anfield on May 23, but the deadline passed at 8am on Monday.
