Liverpool facing travel chaos sparked by train strike and closure of Queens Drive lanes

Liverpool is facing a weekend of travel chaos sparked by a train strike and the closure of a main city road.

Both Liverpool and Arsenal fans heading to Anfield on Saturday are likely to be caught up in the transport carnage.

Fans heading to the 5.30pm kick off could struggle when travelling to the ground because of a Merseyrail strike and ongoing roadworks.

The ECHO reported yesterday that one of the major road routes to the famous ground will be affected.

Queens Drive, at the junction with East Prescot Road, will have two lanes closed from Friday evening in order to repair a gas main that runs underneath.

Queens Drive is known as one of the main routes used to travel around the city so anyone planning to drive this way to the Liverpool v Arsenal match at Anfield is asked to find a different route to avoid closures and traffic.

But there will also be major issues for people who usually travel by train.

On Saturday, the RMT will be holding the first of its fresh round of strikes as workers walk-out in the long running dispute with Merseyrail over new trains.

The union recently announced a new wave of six strikes as they ramped up the row.

This means a reduced Merseyrail service will be operating on Saturday.

What the Merseyrail strike will mean:

- There will be no trains running on the Kirkby, Ellesmere Port or Hunts Cross lines during the strike action.

- While most services will run between the hours of 07:00 and 19:00, there will be a break in service during the middle of the day.

On the Southport to Liverpool line, trains will not call at  Freshfield, Hall Road, Bootle Oriel Road, Bank Hall or Sandhills.
