Liverpool face rival in EFL Trophy as group stage confirmed

Liverpool will face Tranmere Rovers, Wigan Athletic and Port Vale in the group stages of the EFL Trophy next season.

An Under-21 side will be entered into the competition joining the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Leeds United, Leicester City, Manchester City and Manchester United as one of the 16 'Category One' youth sides competing against senior League One and League Two clubs.

The group games are scheduled to take place on September 8 and 9, October 6 and 7, and November 10 and 11.

Liverpool are likely to be managed by Barry Lewtas, having seen former Under-23s manager Neil Critchley take charge of their EFL Trophy fixtures last year.

The young Reds finished bottom of their group having lost to Oldham Athletic, drawn with Fleetwood Town and lost to Accrington Stanley.

However, the competition handed game-time against senior sides to the likes of Curtis Jones, Neco Williams and Harvey Elliott before the trio broke into Jurgen Klopp's first team later in the campaign.

The round of 32 and round of 16 are scheduled to take place on December 8 and 9 and January 12 and 13 respectively with the quarter-finals and semi-finals following on February 2 and 3 and February 16 and 17.

Meanwhile the final will take place at Wembley on March 14.
