Liverpool face potential trip to China as new FIFA Club World Cup plans emerge

Liverpool are likely to face a trip to China in 2021 under plans for the inaugural version of the expanded FIFA Club World Cup.

FIFA are expected to confirm the venue on Friday after a vote of their governing council at its quarterly meeting.

The New York Times report the quadrennial event has now been given the backing of UEFA after initially being strongly opposed by European authorities.

While FIFA wanted 12 teams from Europe to take part, UEFA are now happy to supply a third of the 24-team tournament.

The European governing body want to decide which of their members qualifies for the revamped event.

And it is understood UEFA favour offering the places to the Champions League and Europa League winners over the four-year cycle.

If confirmed, that means Liverpool, the reigning European champions, would be among the first teams to take part in the competition.

WHO MIGHT LIVERPOOL FACE IN THE FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP?

Real Madrid, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid would already have confirmed their berth under such plans, joined by the winners of the two main UEFA club tournaments this season and next.

However, another report from AP claims there could be a cap on the number of teams per country to prevent one domestic league dominating the tournament.

The enlarged FIFA Club World Cup is due to be held in June and July 2021, taking the place of the now scrapped Confederations Cup which was used as a test event for the following year's World Cup.

The tournament would start with eight groups of three, with the winners going through to the quarter-finals. The finalists would play five games.

Liverpool will take part in the current iteration of the FIFA Club World Cup in December, where they will play two games in Qatar.
