Liverpool face harsh Naby Keita decision but no question over Fabinho

Jurgen Klopp was left to reflect on a "professional and mature performance" after Liverpool's victory at Norwich.

For the second season in three years, the Reds got their Premier League campaign up and running with a win by a three-goal margin against the newly-promoted Canaries.

And while the display was some way from perfect, that will not trouble the Reds boss too much as he gears up for the next assignment against Burnley on Saturday.

The game will be the first competitive one with a full support back inside the ground since a Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid in March 2020.

And while that should ensure something of a festival atmosphere on August 21, those on the pitch itself might just feel there's a little bit of a point to prove, too.

Liverpool haven't beaten Sean Dyche's Clarets at home since 2019 and played out a sleepy 1-1 draw with the Premier League title already confirmed in July of last year before the Lancashire side set their hosts into a tailspin in January with the first of six successive defeats for the first time ever at Anfield.

Momentum picked from Saturday's result will not to be tossed away so easily this weekend though as the Reds adjust to their one-game-a-week schedule for the next month or so at least.

Jurgen Klopp has plenty of options to choose from at the back right now, but having kept a clean sheet in Norfolk on Saturday, the Reds boss might just stick with Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip at the heart of the defence.

"Nobody knows, not even himself, if he is at 90 percent or 95 fitness-wise for where you can be, but from a form point of view, it is different," Klopp said of the returning Van Dijk.

"Each game helps obviously and it really helps him. It was really good to see him on the pitch, especially when defending set-pieces, he looked really good.

"Offensive set-pieces, we have two monsters with Joel and Virgil, they are really good in the air.

"We scored from a second ball, I think Mo's goal was a brilliant routine, really. We got the opponents in that area and finished it off, so yes, it was nice to have him back."

Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez are heavyweight options to have in reserve, but their wait for Premier League minutes may just go on this coming weekend.

Kostas Tsimikas will continue to deputise for Andy Robertson as his recovery from an ankle injury continues, while Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alisson Becker will almost certainly start.

In midfield, Klopp, as ever, has a couple of decisions to make.

The absence of Fabinho was an obvious one for around an hour of the win at Carrow Road, as was his presence in the engine room following his introduction for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Expect the No.3 to return to the side having had the benefit of another week's training under his belt.

The issue then is who drops out?

Another is what to do with Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara , who both sat out Saturday's game after their limited pre-season involvement.

Both could be in line for recalls, but that would feel harsh on Naby Keita , whose first appearance since April went swimmingly at the weekend.

With a full pre-season schedule behind him and back in the starting 11, Keita's time could finally, belatedly be approaching after three years largely spent nursing a whole host of minor injuries.

It would seem like a big disappointment for the £52million midfielder if he was left out after performing so admirably against Norwich.

James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could find themselves dropping out as Anfield's doors get set to re-open properly.

Decisions aplenty then for Klopp in midfield.

And up top too as he continues to try and make four go into three.

If Roberto Firmino saw Diogo Jota's inclusion and goal as a personal affront, then he responded with one of his own after turning home Mohamed Salah's cut-back to make it 2-0.

Klopp has a welcome selection headache for who starts down the middle on Saturday lunchtime then and both Jota and Firmino will be desperate to build on the opening of their respective accounts.

The identity of those on the flanks is more predictable, though.

Mohamed Salah became the first player to score in five successive opening weekends with his goal in the 3-0 win, but his all-round game was just as impressive.

"I would have assumed he knew about [that stat] and wanted to score," Klopp said after the game. He would have had extra motivation!

"Mo is Mo and when the competition starts he goes into the next gear because he is a proper competitive boy and that is good to have him."

Sadio Mane will continue to build on his own encouraging performance too on the left side as his perhaps temporary partnership with Tsimikas goes on.
