Liverpool eye transfer of 'next Virgil van Dijk' - who is already on trial at Chelsea

Liverpool are eyeing a move for teenage Dutch defender Xavier Mbuyamba - touted as the next Virgil van Dijk.

The 17-year-old has quickly made an impression in the MVV Maastricht side and is attracting significant interest having been tipped for the top.

According to Voetbal International, Liverpool are amongst a host of clubs tracking him, as well as Celtic, Bayern Munich, FC Porto and Chelsea .

Mbuyamba is already on trial with Chelsea - but Liverpool are keen to swoop and take advantage of the Blues' transfer ban which could cause them to miss out on the talented youngster this summer.

MVV have failed to tie Mbuyamba down to a professional contract, and his encouraging 11 appearances in the Dutch second tier this season will open the door to a move to a top club.

Why Liverpool are growing in confidence in Matthijs de Ligt transfer rat race

The imposing centre-back could be tempted to link up with Dutch compatriot van Dijk at Anfield and look to learn from the best.

Yet he could opt to follow the same path a young van Dijk did by joining Celtic, the move the Liverpool ace made form Groningen as a 20-year-old prospect back in 2013.

The rising star is certainly attracting plenty of interest and will be hoping to impress as he trains with Maurizio Sarri's Chelsea side.

It is understood his training stint at Stamford Bridge will help determine where he will enter their setup, with his age making him eligible to line-up for all their age group sides from Under-17s upwards.

Heracles Almelo and FC Groningen could also look to keep him in Holland by offering him a move up to the Eredivisie.
