Liverpool 'eye Joaquin Correa transfer' in search for Sadio Mane backup

Liverpool have earmarked Lazio forward Joaquin Correa as a potential transfer target, according to reports from Italy.

The Argentina international is regarded as one of the most exciting talents in Serie A on his day, and could be available for as little as £20million in a market ravaged by the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Correa has mainly played as a second striker for Lazio this season, but can also operate from attacking midfield or on the left wing.

Liverpool's first-choice frontline is the envy of world football, but manager Jurgen Klopp needs quality back-up for Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

And 25-year-old Correa could fit the bill, according to CittaCeleste.

The Italian outlet says Correa has a £72m release clause in his contract, but Liverpool could have an ace up their sleeve in any pursuit of the forward.

The Reds still hold a 30% stake in any future sale of Luis Alberto, who joined the Serie A side from Anfield in 2016, so could relinquish that in order to hammer down the price for Correa.

HITC reports that Liverpool could test the water first with a £20m bid - which in the post-pandemic market would still represent a profit for Lazio on the £14m they paid to sign Correa from Sevilla in 2018.

Correa's lightning pace would fit well with Liverpool's fast-paced counter-attacks, and the player has previously praised the Reds' rapid style of play.

After scoring a late goal for Sevilla to rescue a Champions League draw at Anfield in 2017, Correa said: "Liverpool are full of quality, extremely fast and we had to get accustomed to that."

HITC claims Lazio have already identified Mario Goetze and Keita Balde Diao as a potential replacements for Correa.

Correa has scored eight goals and provided four assists for Lazio this season.
