The Reds confirmed ahead of Sunday's FA Cup third-round tie against Shrewsbury that their England right-back had returned a suspected positive test shortly after the 2-2 Premier League draw at Chelsea last weekend.
Alexander-Arnold has therefore been isolating and was not in contention for the visit of League One opposition to Anfield, though Liverpool hope he will return to training at Kirkby this week.
"Trent is missing after registering a suspected positive COVID test shortly after Chelsea. He is expected to return to training in the coming days," Liverpool communicated via their official Twitter account.
Liverpool will hope Alexander-Arnold is available for Thursday's Carabao Cup semi-final meeting with Arsenal.
That fixture on Merseyside has now become the high-profile tie's first leg after Liverpool's recent coronavirus outbreak forced the postponement of the original first leg, due to take place at Emirates Stadium last Thursday.
That match has now been rescheduled for January 20.
Roberto Firmino and Joel Matip both returned to Liverpool's youthful matchday squad to face Shrewsbury after recovering from Covid, while Jurgen Klopp was back in the dugout after his own positive test meant he was absent from Stamford Bridge.
Liverpool re-opened the first-team areas of their training ground on Friday.

"It was a very strange week, but I am very well, thank you. It was kind of three days with kind of cold symptoms," Klopp told LFC TV on Sunday.
"I've never stayed at home with these kind of things, but it's fine - I had to so I stayed home.
"Now for around three to four hours, I am back on duty. It has been a really strange week but I am overly excited, so it is all good."
On his team selection against Shrewsbury, Klopp added: "We made a team with what we got left. That's what we have to do.
"I don't expect the perfect game but I expect a proper fight. In moments I expect a wild game, because I want the boys to be wild."
