Good evening, Liverpool fans. Here are your evening headlines for Sunday, September 6.
Fowler: Reds desperate for window to close
Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler believes Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will be desperate for this summer's transfer window to close.
And that is because the former striker feels Ronald Koeman’s appointment as Barcelona manager may prove an attractive option for Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.
Fowler said : “Liverpool have not done much business in the transfer market this summer – but I would imagine Jurgen Klopp would slam the window shut now if he could," said the former Reds forward.
"Reports from Spain that new Barca boss Ronald Koeman wants to sign Sadio Mane and Gini Wijnaldum will send a cold shiver down the spine of every Liverpool supporter.
" Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho have found it impossible to resist the lure of the Nou Camp in recent years."
Carragher makes bold Messi transfer claim
Jamie Carragher doesn't believe Liverpool or Manchester City should have been interested in Barcelona forward Lionel Messi.
Despite being one of the greatest players to have ever graced the game, Carragher outlined that signing Messi would not be a guarantee of success.
The former Reds defender added that given the Argentine star is now 33 years old, the financial outlay required to prise him away from the Camp Nou him may not have proven wise.
“Standing back and looking at the numbers involved and the age of the player, I am not sure I would have wanted my team to sign him," he said.
"Would he have made City better? Of course.
“But Liverpool still beat Barcelona 4-0 – and Barcelona didn’t win the league this year and have not won the Champions League for a long time.
“We are talking about one of the greatest players, but just because you get him there is no guarantee of success.”
Souness disappointed by transfer strategy
Former Liverpool manager Graeme Souness has outlined his disappointment over the club’s transfer strategy this summer.
Only Kostas Tsimikas has arrived at Anfield in the current window and Souness believes the club have missed the chance to strengthen while on top.
“The perfect time to sign players is when they do not have to be an instant hit but can be gradually introduced, so I am disappointed that Liverpool haven’t done so while they are reigning Premier League and world champions,” wrote Souness in The Times .
“That worked well with the likes of Fabinho and Robertson, who came to the fore after spending several months learning the system and could bed in without the spotlight being on them.
“That was classic Liverpool when I played there and classic Manchester United for over more than 20 years under Sir Alex Ferguson - to strengthen from a position of power.”
