Liverpool evening headlines as Wijnaldum keeps Virgil van Dijk promise, Paul Scholes 'sick' of Reds

Here are your Liverpool evening headlines for Monday, December 7.

Wijnaldum keeps van Dijk promise

Gini Wiljaldum revealed after scoring in Liverpool’s win over Wolverhampton Wanderers that he kept a promise to Virgil van Dijk, who is set to miss a large chunk of the season after undergoing knee surgery earlier this year.

Wijanldum started his 11th game in five weeks for club and country and was excellent once more. Afterwards, he said that his celebration was to honour his fellow Dutch international, who was in attendance at Anfield for the first time.

“I already said that every goal I score this year I will dedicate to him because we all miss him”, Wijnaldum said. “It was great to have him back.

“He said to me in the dressing room, ‘I want to see something today, I want a goal’ so I said: ‘No problem!’”

Paul Scholes “sick” of praising Liverpool

Paul Scholes is “sick” of praising Liverpool after the Reds produced another exemplary display in Sunday’s 4-0 win over Wolves.

Goals from Mohamed Salah, Wijnaldum, Joel Matip and a Nelson Semedo own-goal put the Reds in the ascendency against a dangerous Wolves team. And Scholes said that he has had enough of praising Jurgen Klopp’s team.

“I’m sick of being so nice about Liverpool (laughs),” Scholes, who is a Manchester United legend, told Amazon Prime. “They [Wolves] couldn’t cope with the press of Liverpool.

“They’re not the first team to not be able to cope with it, the last 60-odd teams haven't been able to cope with it.

“Liverpool weren’t at their absolute brilliant best, but the goals, the three forward players, Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson, there’s some really special players.”

Klopp praises Mane, Williams

Klopp singled out Sadio Mane and young Neco Williams for special praise in his post-match comments on Sunday night.

Neither scored on the night and Williams was substituted midway through the second half after he picked up a yellow card earlier on, but Klopp believed that both had strong performances.

“There were plenty of sensational individual performances,” said Klopp. “The young boys were really great.

“Neco Williams, we only took him off because the plan of Wolves was obviously to bring (Adama) Traore on to the left wing so that if Neco makes one more foul, maybe he gets a second yellow. He played really, really good.

“Sadio had a few moments where he controlled the ball where I still don’t understand how he can do those kind of things.

“There were a lot of good performances and that’s how you can win a football game.”
