Liverpool evening headlines as Reds face biggest Premier League TV bill after coronavirus crisis

Here are the Liverpool evening headlines for Monday September 14.

Klopp and Lampard both right about Liverpool spending

Jurgen Klopp and Frank Lampard’s observations on Liverpool’s spending in the transfer market are both correct, writes the ECHO’s Paul Gorst .

The Reds boss has come under some criticism for pointing out the big money transfers of Chelsea and Manchester City this summer, while insisting that Liverpool are not in a position to do the same.

“We live in a world at the moment with a lot of uncertainty,” said Klopp last week. “For some clubs it seems to be less important how uncertain the future is - owned by countries, owned by oligarchs, that's the truth.

“We cannot just change it overnight and say 'so now we want to behave like Chelsea, now we want to behave like them' now they've signed a lot of players.”

Inevitably, Klopp’s comments were labelled as jibes at Liverpool’s rivals.

“I was less annoyed with it, I found it slightly amusing,” Lampard responded. “It's a fantastic story of a club - over four-and-a-half, five years that Jurgen Klopp's been there - that have managed to get recruitment right to a really high level.

“You can go through the Liverpool players - Van Dijk, Alisson, Fabinho, Keita, Mane, Salah - incredible players that came at a very high price.

“The really smart thing they have done is believe in their coach and system for a number of years. It's a great story, but it's a story that has seen money spent on players.”

In truth, both managers’s assessments were accurate, even if they might add to the rivalry between the two clubs ahead of Sunday’s Premier League meeting.

Former Liverpool striker says Reds ‘missed a trick’ not signing Werner

Peter Crouch has admitted Liverpool might have “missed a trick” in not buying Timo Werner this summer.

The German striker instead joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig in a £45million deal.

And Crouch has also suggested his former club should move for Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara before the close of the transfer window.

“There are only so many times Mohamed Salah, who bailed out his team, and Sadio Mane can produce heroics,” Crouch told the Daily Mail . “Adding another midfielder — such as Bayern Munich's Thiago Alcantara — or back-up striker would be welcomed. I have a feeling they missed a trick not getting Timo Werner.”

Liverpool facing biggest PL TV bill after coronavirus crisis

Broadcaster due a rebate are set to hit Liverpool with a bigger TV bill than any other Premier League club.

Premier League clubs were told last season they would be hit with a £330million rebate because of the coronavirus pandemic, which would have to be paid to the league's broadcasting partners following the three-month suspension of the season between March and June.

The Telegraph report that the Premier League has forecast a £17.3m cut in the champions’ television revenue from last season.

Liverpool were due to have pocketed £161.1m but that figure is forecast to drop to £143.8m - a reduction of 5.8% - when the rebate is paid over the next two seasons.

The percentage of revenue share declines for nearly every position in the Premier League table, with runners up Manchester City facing a reduction of 5.6% which would see their revenue drop from £156.7m to £139.9m while 20th placed Norwich City are set for a drop of 3.4% which sees their amount go from £95.2m to £88.1m.
