Liverpool evening headlines as Mohamed Salah return date emerges as youngsters prepare to step up

Good evening, Liverpool fans. Here are your evening headlines for Monday, November 16.

Salah return date emerges

Mohamed Salah could return to Liverpool on Thursday as the Egyptian forward recovers from coronavirus after testing positive for the disease while on international duty.

Salah has been in self-isolation since being made aware of his positive test ahead of Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture against Togo on Friday, quarantining in a hotel in El-Gouna.

The 28-year-old will undergo another test on Thursday and could return to Liverpool should that test come back negative.

“Like any Egyptian citizen, Salah underwent all needed medical scans and tests that showed he is not suffering from any symptoms and he is now following medical protocol with self-isolation,” said the Egyptian Ministry of Health’s head of the COVID-19 committee, Hossam Hosny.

“Liverpool are communicating with us to check on Salah, and their medical staff have agreed that he will travel to El-Gouna. And Salah can return to England if his test result on Thursday is negative.”

City complain to Sky Sports over comments made during Liverpool game

Manchester City have lodged a complaint with Sky Sports after comments made by Roy Keane during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium.

The former Manchester United midfielder called Walker a “car crash” and “an idiot” for conceding a penalty against the Premier League champions before the international break, giving Liverpool the chance to score from the spot.

According to the Daily Mail , City took exception to Keane’s remarks and have expressed their view to Sky Sports that the Irishman overstepped the mark.

Speaking after the match, Keane highlighted why he still sees Liverpool as the team to beat in the Premier League this season.

“What I enjoyed most about Liverpool today, as well as their qualities that we know they have and the one or two injuries they have, I always look at teams who have won the league, they have that mindset, the body language, the desire.

“I see a lot of that in this Liverpool team and I still think that it’s going to take a lot to stop this team.”

Liverpool youngsters will be given chance to step up

The long-term injury suffered by Joe Gomez while on international duty worsened Liverpool's injury problems, with the Premier League champions now down to the bare bones at the back.

Yet despite the absences of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Fabinho, the Reds currently do not plan to enter the January transfer market to sign a new centre-back as many fans and pundits assumed they would be.

However, Liverpool’s remaining options will be given a trial period over the next few weeks to show what they can do while Jurgen Klopp assesses whether to change that stance on reinforcements.

The next 11 games - eight in the Premier League and three in the Champions League - will provide the likes of Rhys Williams, Billy Phillips and Nat Koumetio with a platform to shine.
