Liverpool evening headlines as Lionel Messi praises Reds quartet and UEFA issue fine

Here are your Liverpool evening headlines for Tuesday, March 31.

Sutton on Kane to Liverpool

Former Chelsea and Celtic striker Chris Sutton thinks Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane would be “stupid” to turn down Liverpool or Manchester City if either of them came in for him.

Kane admitted recently that his future may be away from Spurs as he wants to win more trophies.

The 26-year-old is yet to win a major club honour, after spending his whole senior career at Spurs, apart from loan spells elsewhere.

Kane’s has won individual achievements, claiming the Premier League’s Golden Boot prize in back-to-back seasons in 2015/16 and 2016/17.

Sutton believes that if the Premier League’s top two became interested in the England striker then Kane would be “stupid” to turn either of them down.

“We all understand that he wants to win something,” Sutton said to BBC Radio 5 Live.

“So if he wants to win something, I wouldn’t begrudge him a move. Spurs are a brilliant club, but at this moment in time they are way behind the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.

“If one of those clubs came in for him, if you were Harry Kane, you would be stupid not to go.”

Messi praises Liverpool quartet

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has heaped the praise on Liverpool quartet: Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Messi named the Reds’ stars in a collection of the best 25 players in the Champions League, with the Argentine teaming up with Topps to design a set of trading cards.

On van Dijk’s card, Messi wrote: “He is a very tough opponent, one of the best in the world.”

On Alisson, Messi complimented the goalkeeper’s calmness and composure: “He is very calm. He seems to have more time than most goalkeepers.”

Messi praised Salah and is a fan of the Liverpool attacker’s style: “He has been amazing for Liverpool FC. I like his style.”

Finally, on Mane, Messi was clearly impressed with the Senegalese’s energy: “He is like a midfielder, winger, striker. He is everywhere.”

There was also a mention for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who made the rising stars list, and Messi described his attacking abilities as “the future”.

Reds hit with UEFA fine

Liverpool have been fined by UEFA after their Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid earlier in the month.

UEFA have fined £2,838 the Reds after some supporters setting off fireworks during the second-leg on March 11 at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s side lost 3-2 on the night, meaning a 4-2 aggregate score after winning the competition the season before.

Similarly, Atletico have also been fined for the blocking of public passageways after the first-leg that took place in the Spanish capital.
