Liverpool evening headlines as Jurgen Klopp outlines Virgil van Dijk role in Champions League push

Here are your Liverpool evening headlines for February 26.

Jota returns to training

Diogo Jota made his long-awaited return to first-team training with the Liverpool squad this week as he steps up his recovery from a knee injury.

Jota had missed more than two months with the issue, and while this weekend's match against Sheffield United may come too soon for the 24-year-old, he could be in line to feature in a crucial top-four clash against Chelsea.

Jota had scored nine goals in 17 games before suffering the knee problem, and Jurgen Klopp is excited about welcoming the summer signing back into the fold.

"It's positive. Diogo is back after a long time," he said in his pre-match press conference on Friday. "The way he came back in training is very positive so we just have to make a decision over what makes sense for him. You have to focus on training and you have to enjoy it."

Henderson undergoes surgery

Jordan Henderson has undergone surgery for the groin problem he picked up in last weekend's Merseyside Derby defeat.

Henderson was filling in at centre-back once again and pulled up midway through the match. He was eventually substituted after initially trying to play on.

After scans showed damage to the adductor, Henderson underwent successful surgery this week and will begin rehabilitation immediately.

There was an option for Henderson to recover without a procedure but after consulting with the club's medical staff earlier this week, it was deemed that surgery was the better route in his recovery.

Liverpool have not provided an official timescale on the Liverpool captain's return, though he is expected to play again this season.

Van Dijk role in Champions League push

Jurgen Klopp has insisted Liverpool's injured 'leaders' still have a major role to play in this season's push for Champions League qualification.

It was confirmed Jordan Henderson is set for an extended period on the sidelines along with Virgil van Dijk but lopp believes each player will be still able to help their available teammates in their bid for a top-four finish.

He said: "They all have to be influential, that's clear with so many injured players not available in the moment and most of them are leaders in this group.

"They are here doing their rehab, Hendo is not here yet but Virgil, Milly, Joe, Joel, they all have to be influential.

"In the moment Hendo is back, he has to play this role while doing his rehab."
