Liverpool evening headlines as Jurgen Klopp clarifies transfer comments

Here are your Liverpool evening headlines for Friday, January 22.

Jurgen Klopp admits to Liverpool transfer recommendations

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has clarified his previous comments about the club’s transfer activity, amid fears of a disagreement with Fenway Sports Group.

The Reds boss was speaking after Thursday’s defeat to Burnley, where the question of whether or not the club will sign a centre-back yet again emerged.

Klopp says that the situation has not changed, and clarified his previous comments where he hinted at frustration at being unable to do business during this month's transfer window.

"Of course somebody else is making the decisions," said Klopp, in his pre-match press conference. "It was always like this. If people are surprised about that now then I cannot change that.

"The situation is we discuss pretty much on a daily basis - that's our job, actually - if we could improve something or not.

"I make recommendations and all these kind of things. But I cannot spend the money. That's not how it is.

"That's what I mean (when I say) I don't make these decisions - and I never did"

Asked if it's reliant on being told he has the money to spend, Klopp responded: "Exactly. Is that news to you?

"I don't want to confuse anybody. I just said what I said, and hopefully we can clarify it now."

Carragher expresses title concerns

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has expressed his worries over the current situation at his old club, amid the poor run of form.

The defeat to Burnley means Liverpool are still six points off top spot in the Premier League, but that could be extended to seven should Manchester City win their game in hand.

With Tottenham and Everton able to jump above Liverpool, in fourth, if they win their games in hand, Carragher believes chances of retaining the title are waning and the club may even be concerned about qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.

Carragher said: "We’re talking about a blip for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp has come out and defended his players as you’d expect, and these players have done so much for Liverpool. But at this moment, they look like the title is slipping away. You think it’s going to be really difficult.

"At this moment, yes, it looks like six points from the top, that can still be recovered, the fixtures they have in the next couple of months. I think Liverpool in the next couple of weeks will start worrying about the top four position rather than the title.

"They need to get back to winning games, scoring goals. He’s got a lot to ponder, you can’t quite believe what’s happened to Liverpool in the last few weeks. You go from that 7-0 win over Palace, so many players out of form at the same time. There’s so many teams this season that are challenging for the top four, that will be a concern for Liverpool until they get out of this poor form."

‘Really low point’ for Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp has opened up on the “really low point” he and the Liverpool squad after losing to Burnley.

The Reds have now gone five league games without a win, and have failed to score in each of their previous four outings.

Klopp accepts lack of self-belief has become a significant issue as he dismissed suggestions of tiredness from his players.

"I don't have a better word than frustrated," Klopp said. "That's what I feel.

"It's not possible to lose the game, but we made even that happen. That's a really low point, now, I have to say.

"In football the quality of the players is important, there is no doubt about that. But confidence is important as well.

"After trying it 90 times and scoring only one goal, it's not good for confidence. We have to stay in a specific way and do it better and more often.

"We have no physical problem. We've had more days off than we have in the last few years. That's not our problem."
