Liverpool evening headlines as Gary Neville makes Premier League title claim

Good evening, Liverpool fans. Here are your evening headlines for Thursday, September 10.

Former City star lauds Gomez

Joe Gomez has been described as England's best central defender by former Manchester City star Micah Richards.

The 23-year-old centre-back has cemented himself as Virgil van Dijk's partner in the Liverpool defence and also started both of England's Nations League games during the last international break.

And Richards, a former England international, believes Gomez has all the traits required to be one of the finest defenders the game - and says he’s already comfortably the best in England.

“It's so hard to pick out the key players from the champions, as they have got world-class players from front to back,” Richards said in his Mail column.

“So I'm nominating Gomez as my one to watch as I believe he's got so much more in his locker.

“He is England's best central defender — without a shadow of a doubt — and I want to see him become a real leader this season. I know he can do it.”

Richards also rated Harvey Elliott as the best young prospect at Liverpool, but he, perhaps unsurprisingly, feels Manchester City can pip the Reds to the title this year.

Neville expects Liverpool drop off

Liverpool's relentless form during the 2019/20 campaign will take its toll on the squad this season, according to Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville.

The former Manchester United captain says he’s speaking from experience when detailing why the title-winners will suffer a drop-off this term.

However, speaking to the Guardian , Neville says signing new players would re-inject the spark needed, with one particular talent a good example.

“To ask them to go again and achieve that same standard would be a superhuman effort.

“It wouldn’t be ridiculous to suggest there will be a slight drop-off, if they don’t somehow stimulate that squad by doing something to give them that lift again. Thiago would be the big one.

“He is world class and would give them a world-class presence in an area of the field where they don’t have one.”

Reds full-back headed for Portugal

Anderson Arroyo is again set to leave Liverpool this summer as he still does not have a work permit to play in England.

The Colombian full-back has spent time in Belgium and Spain already since joining the Reds, before heading to Bulgaria last season - but his senior experience overall has still been minimal.

Now the ECHO understand that Tondela want to sign him for 2020/21 , with the Liga NOS side currently managed by former Reds assistant Pako Ayesteran.

Another season-long deal is on the agenda for Arroyo, who is now 20 years old.
