Champions League squad sees one player overlooked
Jurgen Klopp has named his Liverpool Champions League squad for the season and while most of the list is straight-forward, one name has been left out .
That is Welsh attacker Harry Wilson, who could have been named as a homegrown player in the 25-man squad, but has been left out, giving Klopp 24 names on his A list.
The assumption, then, is that Wilson will be heading out on loan before the domestic deadline passes, while the likes of Kostas Tsimikas, Diogo Jota and Xherdan Shaqiri are all included on the European list.
Harvey Elliott is also on the list, while Curtis Jones and Neco Williams are on the B list.
Surprise support for Reds from City
Jurgen Klopp has been vocal about his opinion that Premier League clubs should have been able to have five subs again this season, saying his concern is for the players in a crowded and congested season.
Other competitions around Europe are doing so, but England’s top flight has reverted to the use of three again.
But support for Klopp’s thoughts has come from Manchester City chief executive Ferran Soriano.
The MEN cite him saying there are “too many games” for the players to contend with, while some of the fixtures don’t add real value.
“Some games need to be played and we want them to be played because they excite fans and generate revenue that feeds the whole part of it. Some other games don't add value and put players at risk,” he said.
"The welfare of players has been a problem before Covid, now it is an extreme problem.” Soriano also claimed “half the teams” in the Premier League felt the same way.
Barnes says Sancho would have to fight for a place
Even arriving at Anfield as a £100million signing wouldn’t guarantee Jadon Sancho a spot in this Liverpool team.
That’s the view of John Barnes, who feels it’s an unnecessary signing right now for the Reds anyway, as Jota, Divock Origi and Shaqiri provide cover for the starting trio, while Takumi Minamino also only joined in January.
The former No. 10 also says that Sancho would have to earn his way into the starting lineup , such is the consistency that Jurgen Klopp’s front three have shown until now.
"I can’t see Sancho getting in ahead of Mane, Salah or Firmino, so for him to come he would have to fight for a place and not necessarily be in the team,” he said.
"I don’t think anyone from the front three will be replaced. It’s good to get great players, but are Liverpool going to spend £100m on one player? I doubt it very much.
"I don’t think that’s one that will happen."
