Liverpool Echo named News Website of the Year at international awards

The Liverpool Echo won the News Website of the Year trophy at the newsawards 2021 ceremony.

The awards took place at the Lancaster Hotel, in London, and celebrated the very best printed and digital new brands from across the globe.

It was hosted by TV presenter Mark Durden-Smith.

Judges said they were looking for news sites "that combined excellent content with creative use of technologies " with "commercial success also an influential factor".

The Echo entry included a report from the Royal's ICU Covid ward during the height of the pandemic and coverage of Liverpool FC’s 2020 Premier League victory, the club’s first top-flight title in 30 years.

The website beat off stiff competition from KentOnline, the Belfast Telegraph, ChronicleLive, Independent.ie, The Irish News and Yorkshire Live.

Judges said: " The Echo has undertaken a wide range of new, creative, customer engagement activities over the year.

"Regarded by one judge as 'best in class' for its entrepreneurial approach and for fully utilising the relevant digital technology available, making this a seamless multimedia experience for readers.

"It feels like a product specifically built for the people of Liverpool."

The newspaper was commended in the Regional Daily Newspaper category with judges praising the "powerful front-page stories and campaigning articles that never shy away from major issues".

Also commended in the Digital Innovation category, judges said the Echo entry "demonstrated a positive response during lockdown to get much needed content to local audiences".

The Echo's national sister title the Daily Mirror won the big prize of the night - the Fujifilm Grand Prix - for its print and online Covid coverage providing understandable information in the form of Q&As, analysis and advice from in-house experts.

Echo editor Maria Breslin said: "We are blessed with a talented team of journalists and I am delighted the judges recognised their hard work and dedication.

"In troubled times people turn to trusted brands and our number one priority has been to provide readers with information - accurate information from credible sources, fact-checked by our qualified journalists - to try to help them make sensible and informed decisions in uncertain times.

"We may have been working from home throughout the pandemic but our priority remained to provide the people of the Liverpool city region with the quality news they deserve."
