Liverpool and Man City trio in new head-to-head battle for major honours

Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Trent Alexander-Arnold have all been recognised by their fellow professionals for their excellent seasons at Liverpool with a PFA award nomination.

Van Dijk and Mane have both been included on the six-man shortlist for the PFA Player of the Year award.

The Liverpool duo are joined by Manchester City trio Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero and Bernardo Silva, along with Chelsea's Eden Hazard.

Don't call Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suarez Liverpool legends

Mohamed Salah, last year's winner, was not nominated despite being the Premier League's current top scorer alongside Agero.

Van Dijk is currently the favourite with the bookmakers to become the first defender to win the award since Chelsea's John Terry in 2005.

Alexander-Arnold, meanwhile, is on the six-man shortlist for the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

City duo Sterling and Bernardo Silva are also in the running for the gong, alongside Manchester United's Marcus Rashford, West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice and Bournemouth's David Brooks.

The award ceremony will take place on Sunday, April 28.
