Liverpool duo face race against time as decision date confirmed

Liverpool duo Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold have less than a fortnight to convince Gareth Southgate they should be in England's squad for next month's Euro 2020 finals.

Three Lions boss Southgate will confirm a 26-man squad on May 25 at 1pm after UEFA gave the green light to bolster numbers from the usual 23 in light of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Henderson hasn't featured for Liverpool since suffering a groin injury in February and has only recently restarted running outside at the club's training complex in Kirkby.

Alexander-Arnold, meanwhile, was a shock omission from England's last squad for their World Cup qualifiers in March, with Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier and Reece James all preferred in the right-back slot.

Southgate subsequently challenged the Liverpool man - who featured at the 2018 World Cup - to prove he should regain his berth, with Alexander-Arnold scoring the Reds' winner against Aston Villa in front of the watching England boss a few weeks later.

Henderson's fitness is an ongoing concern for Southgate with Liverpool having only four Premier League games remaining, although the midfielder's importance as deputy captain to Harry Kane means he will be given every chance to prove his availability.

England play warm-up matches against Austria on June 2 and Romania four days later before starting their Euro 2020 campaign against Croatia at Wembley on June 13.

Joe Gomez has long been ruled out of the Euros with a serious knee injury picked up while training with his country in November.

And if Henderson and Alexander-Arnold don't make the final cut, it will be the first England squad at a major tournament not to have representation from Liverpool since the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

The 1954 World Cup is the only other time this has happened.
