Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has given his reaction as international teammate Donny van de Beek looks set to move to Manchester United.
The Old Trafford club are reportedly closing in on the signing of the Ajax midfielder after the two clubs agreed a fee in the region of £40m.
According to recent reports, United have now firmed up their interest, although a medical and personal terms are still to be concluded.
It has been suggested Van de Beek is set to sign a five-year deal, which should allow him to be available for United's opening game of the 2020/21 Premier League season.
And in a press conference while away on international duty with Netherlands, the Liverpool defender was asked whether he tried to convince his teammate against joining the Reds’ fierce rivals.
"Did I try to change his mind [about joining United]? No," he said with a smile in the media briefing.
But Van Dijk has backed his international teammate to be a success in the Premier League and has also wished Nathan Ake well after he completed a move to Manchester City earlier this month.
He continued: "If it happens [Van de Beek to United] – and it looks like it – then I give him that wholeheartedly.
"Great for him, great for Dutch football, for the Dutch national team and another great club for an Oranje player.
"The same goes for Nathan Aké who has gone to Manchester City."
