Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold withdraws from England squad with back injury

Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has withdrawn from the England squad with a back injury.

The FA confirmed the news on Wednesday evening, saying in a statement that the 20-year-old arrived at England's St. Georges Park training base on Monday with the problem but would now be returning to Liverpool to undergo treatment - missing the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Montenegro as a result.

"Trent Alexander-Arnold has withdrawn from the England squad and returned to Liverpool," the statement read.

"The right-back arrived nursing a back injury and, despite progress in recent days, it was unlikely he would be able to play a role in the forthcoming UEFA EURO 2020 qualifiers.

"The 20-year-old will now continue his rehabilitation at his club leaving Gareth Southgate with a 22-man squad."

Alexander-Arnold is the fifth player to withdraw from Southgate's initial 25-man squad after Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Fabian Delph, John Stones and Luke Shaw were all forced to return to their respective clubs because of injury.

While Crystal Palace full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka would seem an obvious replacement for Alexander-Arnold, having missed out on Southgate's initial squad despite being in impressive form for the Eagles this season, he is set to feature for the England Under-21s against Poland on Thursday night and so is unlikely to be called up to the senior side.
