Liverpool defender suffers 'season-ending injury' and returns early from loan

Liverpool loanee Adam Lewis has suffered a season-ending hamstring injury as his time at Newport County comes to an end.

The 23-year-old had been impressing during his spell with the Welsh side, but scans after limping off in the 1-1 draw with Walsall earlier in February have shown his campaign is over.

Lewis made 28 appearances for Newport as they sit 18th in League Two as manager Graham Coughlan expressed his 'disappointment' at losing the full-back.

He said of Lewis' departure: "The scans weren’t good. It’s a hamstring injury and that’s his season finished.

“We are massively disappointed because he’s been a brilliant servant for this club from Liverpool on loan, and we thank both Liverpool and Adam for his service. It’s a big loss because he gives us balance with the left foot on that side and [is dangerous] with his set pieces.

“I am a body down and we don’t have the biggest squad but we will do what we do in true Newport County fashion, we will roll our sleeves up and dig deep.”

Newport expressed their thanks to Lewis on social media: "Some sad news to report. We can now confirm that a season-ending injury to Adam Lewis brings his loan with us to an end prematurely. Thank you for all your efforts Adam and #NCAFC wish you a speedy recovery."
