Liverpool defender signs first professional contract after £500k transfer

Highly-rated young left-back Calum Scanlon his signed his first professional deal with Liverpool.

The defender, who turned 17 last month, has put pen to paper with the Reds having first arrived from Championship side Birmingham City as a 15-year-old early last year for a fee believed to be in the region of £500,000.

Scanlon made his debut for the under-18s last May when he featured for the final 26 minutes of the home win over Derby County.

The youngster, who can also play in midfield, has continued to progress and has been a regular for Marc Bridge-Wilkinson's side since November.

He featured in the 4-1 FA Youth Cup win at Burnley in January and also made the bench for the U19s in their UEFA Youth League round of 16 win over Genk last week.

Scanlon, an England youth international, will hope to be part of the squad for the quarter-final at Juventus next Tuesday.
