Liverpool defender set to join Newcastle United after turning down contract

Liverpool youngster Remi Savage is set to join Newcastle United after declining the offer of a new contract with the Reds.

Savage was offered a one-year extension having signed his first professional deal with his boyhood club last June.

But the 19-year-old centre-back has instead chosen to make the move to the North East, where he is expected to sign a three-year deal to join their under-23 set-up.

Liverpool are expected to receive around £250,000 compensation for Savage, who joined their Academy as an under-9 player and was in the squad that won the FA Youth Cup in 2019.

Savage, who was born in Liverpool, started 15 of 26 Premier League 2 games last season for the U23s and featured twice in the EFL Trophy.

However, he has opted to move to Newcastle to bolster his chances of first-team football.

Liverpool also offered contracts at the end of the season to out-of-contract senior goalkeeper Adrian and Academy left-back Yasser Larouci.

But while Adrian penned a two-year deal, Larouci - who hasn't featured for the U23s since last October - is expected to follow Savage in leaving the club.

Liverpool have already announced Academy quartet Liam Coyle, Joe Hardy, Abdi Sharif and Jack Walls will leave when their contracts expire this summer.
