Liverpool defender ready for 'different challenge' and makes Premier League claim

Nat Phillips believes he hasn't been out of depth in the Premier League but knows he has room to improve at Liverpool.

Phillips made only his fourth Reds appearance in the frustrating goalless draw at Newcastle United on Wednesday evening.

The clean sheet was the first for the 23-year-old in the top flight having previously featured in the 2-1 win over West Ham United and the 1-1 draw at Brighton and Hove Albion.

With Joel Matip out for at least another fortnight, Phillips is competing with teenager Rhys Williams to partner Fabinho at centre-back for the trip to Southampton on Monday.

And the 23-year-old, who made his first appearance in a month in midweek, is confident he can continue adapting to the elite level.

“That’s what I want to be doing: get out on the pitch and playing games,” he said.

“It was a tough game for myself, very physical, they didn’t make it easy for me up there. But there’s plenty for me to work on, I’ll look back on the game and see what areas I need to improve on. But a clean sheet isn’t too bad.

“It’s definitely challenged me (at this level). I wouldn’t say I’ve felt out of my depth. The more games I’ve played, the more I’m getting used to it, but each game provides a different challenge."

Speaking to liverpoolfc.com, Phillips added: “With each game I’ve just got to try to gather experiences from them and work on the things I need to get better at, learn from each game and hopefully get the momentum.”
